Carpet Cleaning Techniques

Synthetic Carpets
Regular Care: Vacuuming – To remove visible dirt with numerous passes in different directions. Use a beater brush mechanism, set to the highest level. Try to change bag as soon as possible because suction decreases after that.
Liquid Spills – Clean immediately, use the blot technique rather than scrubbing. If the area discolors, there"s probably a sticky residue that has trapped dirt. Bloat while misting warm water.
Deep Cleaning on Your Own: Professional steam cleaning works is the absolute best on carpeting and may be required by the manufactures warranty. If you want to do it yourself, vacuum daily, then use an amateur cleaning machine from a rental company (avoid super market machines as they are weak). Test the cleaning solution by pouring a few drops into a saucer and allowing to evaporate (a hair drier speeds the process). If the dried residue in the saucer remains sticky, then try another cleaner. Use fans or air-conditioning units to quickly dry carpet. Area rugs can be cleaned using the same methods.
Wool Carpeting
Daily Cleaning: Vacuuming – Follow the instructions above, but do not use a rotary brush on loop-pile carpets; the yarn may fuzz. Use a floor tool instead.
Liquid Spills – Clean by misting with water and blotting, as mentioned above.
Deep-Cleaning On Your Own: For both area rugs and carpets, home cleaning is not recommended because wool fibers absorb more water than synthetic fibers do. These are best left to the professionals to ensure the stain is removed without damaging the material.
Manufacturers recommend that you call a professional to thoroughly clean your carpets..

DIY Removing Stains Tips
Sometimes commercial cleaners are not the best solution for a suborn stain; here are some everyday do it yourself cleaning solutions:

Stain Type: pop, berries, candy, chocolate, coffee, gravy, ice cream.
Best Cleaner: Hydrogen Peroxide cleans these stains without breaking down carpet color dyes.
Mix: Buy 3% solution at a pharmacy and use full strength.
Technique: Scoop up solids with a knife. Blot liquids liberally. Rinse thoroughly. If stain remains then use soapy water and rinse. Repeat. If you are not seeing results dab hydrogen peroxide on. Wait for a few hours then repeat method if necessary.

Stain Type: Cat urine, beer.
Best Solution: Full strength White Vinegar, a mild acid, neutralizes alkaline spills.
Mix: Dilute 1 cup white vinegar in 1 cup water.
Technique: Blot up spill and rinse. If stain remains then use soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Repeat until spot is no longer visable.

Stain Type: ketchup, cough syrup, soy sauce, watercolor paint, acidic substances.
Cleaner: Ammonia neutralizes any acidic spills.
Mix: Dilute 1 tablespoon in 1/2 cup water.
Note: Never use on wool fibers; it will destroy the fibers. Rather dilute spill with plain water.
Technique: Soak up liquid spills. Scrape off solids with a utensil. Use diluted ammonia solution with a spray bottle or a saturated towel. Apply pressure on the area with dry towel. Rinse. If stain remains you should call a professional to assist, ammonia must be used cautiously.
Caution: Ammonia is dangerous. Use proper ventilation.

Stain Type: Oily substances, asphalt and tar, wax and crayon, grease, hand lotion, ballpoint ink, makeup.
Best solution: Rubbing Alcohol dissolves oily or waxy substances and is much safer than solvents in commercial spot cleaners.
Mix: Use full strength right from the bottle. Do not let it puddle; it may destroy the carpet backing.
Technique: Soak up or scrape off as much as possible. Use 90% rubbing alcohol with a towel or cotton ball. For stubborn stains, blot with a clean towel, and repeat until towel remains clean. If spill is on the carpet tips then work material out by gently rubbing in the same direction instead of blotting. If stain remains, blot with soapy water and rinse and repeat. If needed add hydrogen peroxide as described above.

Stain Type: chewing gum, nail polish, rust, industrial etc
Technique: For chewing gum: Freeze with ice, break off pieces, and manually pick them out. If that doesn"t work, go to a supply store for a spray that freezes the gum and allows you to scrape it off. For rust: Apply soapy water. Rinse. Repeat until improvement stops. If stain persists, call a professional cleaner.
For nail polish: Dab on nail-polish remover with a cotton ball and then use a clean cloth.

Tips for better security

When dealing with home or commercial security the lock you buy for the door is only a small part of a secure building. There is much more to keep in mind when making sure your loved ones or business affairs are secure.

First of all, the lock is only as secure as the door and building it is mounted in. Inexpensive wooden doors that can easily be kicked open or broken through will not be strengthened with the simple addition of a high security lock. When possible, it is best to avoid any windows and other openings around the door. If you have a window built in your door then you must take the proper precautions so attackers cannot reach inside to unlock the deadbolt by hand. This includes using a double deadbolt (if fire codes permit it) or a deadbolt with a locking thumbturn.

On large sliding glass doors, the locks frequently used can be very weak or easy to bypass, and are often not interchangeable. It is best to install a product known as a Charlie Bar that acts much like a stick in the bottom of the door track, but is far more secure. The Charlie Bar must first be raised from the inside in order to open the door, making it far harder for unauthorized entry from the outside.

In common residential instances, the door frame, door jamb, and the door hinges can serve as major weak points in addition to the door. If they are not enforced enough to keep the bolt in place, the door can still be kicked in or pried open. There are several products that are meant to help reinforce these areas to resist forced entry. A very popular product called the Jamb Armor is very effective. It is a steel piece of metal that wraps around the door jamb on both sides and is held in place by several long screws driven into the surrounding studs in order to withstand the maximum amount of force. They also make a product called a door shield that wraps around the edge of the door, under the deadbolt lock on the door itself, in order to try and prevent the deadbolt from bending or breaking through the door. Lastly, they make hinge reinforcements (called hinge shields) to enhance the strength of the hinges. Installing the Jamb Armor is labour intensive because it requires the removal of the molding around the door prior to installation. For your a typical handyman, it may take a day or so to install or only 1-2 hours for a red seal carpenter. If it is being installed on a new door, then it is a relatively easy installation process that should be done before painting and should take under 30 minutes per door. There are some other products to choose from such as the StrikeMaster II that does not require the removal of molding around the door, but only reinforces the jamb. Armor Concepts, the makers of DJArmor, have come up with a secondary product called EZArmor , which is a screw on top product similar to most of the other products in the industry. EZArmor still reinforces all three weak points on the door. However, as it is a screw on top product, the installation is easier than the DJArmor and does not require the removal of molding from around the door. This comes at a cost to the strength of the product; without being able to wrap around the door jamb, it is not as strong as the full DJArmor product. However, it is the best screw on top solution that we have found.

Windows are always a security concern when it comes to the home. Many burglars will avoid breaking windows due to possible injury and the unwanted attention that the noise can bring. However, if the burglar is determined and there are no other easy means of entry, the burglar will smash a window to enter the building. There are three standard options for properly securing windows. The first is exterior bars or other physical barriers to prevent large objects (such as a person) from passing through them. Consequently these are barbaric and too much of an eyesore to be worthwhile and may actually draw unwanted attention. The second option is to purchase and install high security windows that are extremely shatter resistant and hard to break; while these offer great protection they are significantly expensive and often hard to acquire. The final solution is to use a security film that is meant to make ordinary windows much harder to shatter in a fashion that allows someone to enter. The film bonds to the glass so that when someone attempts to break the window, it will crack but stay in one piece and resist a great amount of force. The security film comes in a roll of thin transparent film and can be purchased from many online vendors.

If you own a business or are extremely worried about physical attack on your exterior doors, there is a product that can offer great protection. While even the Protec locks offers extremely high resistance to most drilling equipment, with the proper high security items and a specialize drilling rig, it can still be successfully drilled. Virtually all modern high security cylinders are vulnerable to criminals. For these situations, there is one product that has risen as the best defense against physical attack, the Geminy Shield. The Geminy Shield is a guard that is connected to the door, surrounds the standard lock cylinder , and must first be opened to reveal the normal cylinder. This additional layer of security makes your locks far more impervious to physical attack. For more information on the Geminy Shield, please contact us today.

Finally, security is most effective when it is applied in many layers. Don"t bet on a single security system for your entire residence or commercial building. A diverse security system includes cameras, alarm systems, and secure safes for extremely valuable items. Alarm systems act as a strong deterrent for many criminals and they help to ensure that if a physical attack is occurring, the police are contacted immediately. Unfortunately, even the top alarm systems generally have response times between five and fifteen minutes. This means that your other security systems need to deter criminals until the authorities arrive. Cameras provide footage of not only the attackers themselves, but also of what actions were taken and what possessions were removed. Finally, a locked safe can provide security protection and fire protection for your valuables. When looking for a safe it is very important to ensure that it can be bolted to the ground and that it offers fire protection of at least two hours. It is also very important that the safe is actually bolted to a secure surface. Otherwise the criminal will be able to easily take your safe and focus on breaking into the safe at a later time. If you follow these tips you will help ensure that your valuables are secure long enough for the authorities to arrive.

Why You Need To Clean Your Dryer Vent

A Clean your Dryer Vent is Important
Many homeowners are not even aware of the need to have their dryer vent professionally cleaned. If you haven"t had your vent cleaned in over a year, then it is already constricted with excess lint fibers. As time goes on, the vent fills with lint that slips past your dryer’s filter and that could lead to a fire. Not having your dryer vent cleaned on a regular basis could prove to be costly financially and a serious threat to the safety of your home and family. Though your dryer vent is often very short, it is still best to have it cleaned professionally and then scheduled for regular cleanings on a annual basis. It will give you peace of mind and will ensure you and your family breathe easier.
Benefits of Regular Dryer Vent Cleaning
In addition to reducing the risk of a fire in your home, regular dryer vent cleaning can also improve the efficiency of your dryer. As time goes on, lint fiber and other debris can build up in your dryer vent which causes the vent to become blocked. A blocked vent results in higher energy consumption by your dryer. Having your dryer vent cleaned on an annual basis can not only help you prevent a potential house fire, but it can also help you save money through lower electricity bills.

Why you should have your dryer vent cleaned annually:
Helps protect against house fires and pollutants
Will save money with reduced energy costs
Your dryer will last longer
Your clothes will dry faster

Benefits of HVAC Cleaning

The Top Benefits of HVAC Cleaning

Why should you have your HVAC system regularly cleaned? The simple answer is obvious: because over time they become dirty and they have the potential to contain very large deposits of dust and debris.

Energy Savings

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40% of the electricity used for cooling or heating is wasted. Dust particles in the cooling and heating system cause it to over work and results in a shortened life of your system. Even though filters are used, the cooling and heating system still gets dirty through regular day to day use. When an HVAC system is professionally cleaned, the system doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. This means that less energy is used, resulting in better cost-effectiveness.

Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is one concern that building managers and building inhabitants have when they decide to look into a HVAC system. Through normal occupation in a building, we produce a large amount of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dust, dander, and chemicals. These contaminants are sucked into the HVAC system and then re-circulated as much as 7 times per day. As time goes on, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work.

While a contaminated HVAC system doesn"t necessarily mean unhealthy air, the situation may be contributing to larger health issues or harboring contaminants that could cause serious problems for people with respiratory health conditions, autoimmune disorders or some environmental allergies.

An Overview of the Process

During cleaning, the whole HVAC system is placed under constant negative pressure (vacuum) to prevent the spread of debris and contaminants.
This continuous negative pressure allows micro particles to be removed from the entire system as they become airborne; ensuring that these micro particles are not reintroduced into the living space when the system is turned on after cleaning.
This negative pressure also assists in extracting the loose particles, which are then collected, contained and removed from your house.
It is common for HVAC system components to collect significant amounts of debris and particulate while construction is happening in a building. The North American Duct Cleaning Association highly recommends that all newly installed HVAC systems or HVAC systems undergoing renovation be thoroughly cleaned, and protected before the system is turned on.

Dryer Safety Tips

The main cause of home clothes dryer and washer fires is failure to clean them properly.

Have your dryer maintained and installed by a professional technician.
Do not use the dryer without a properly working lint filter.
Make sure you clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry. Remove the excess lint that has collected around the drum.

Mean Green (not to be confuse with Simple Green) can be bought at most dollar stores. It can also be used as a detergent in a carpet and upholstery cleaning machine. Use only half the amount of Mean Green that the directions read for upholstery cleaning. Always spot test the solution in an inconspicuous part of the furniture before using on the entire area. Apply with the upholstery cleaner and wipe off the area with a dry cloth.

White vinegar can be used by wetting a rag and wringing it out completely so that it"s no longer dripping wet. Then thoroughly wipe the upholstered furniture down. The smell is strong at first but after awhile it leaves the furniture smelling fresh. This only removes surface dirt so if you need deep thorough cleaning, this may not be best for you.

Here is a homemade mixture made out of everyday products that works very well. Mix six tablespoons of soap flake, one pint of boiling hot water and two tablespoons of Borax. Combine everything together until it cools and forms into a gel. Thoroughly beat the gel into a foam. Use a abrasive cloth or upholstery brush to apply the foam to the fabric without soaking it. Finally, wipe the dirt away with a damp cloth.

Upholstery cleaning products

Woolite foam upholstery cleaner works very well as directed. You can also beat Woolite liquid soap or a mild dish soup with water added until it is light and foamy. Avoiding Rip Offs

To some degree, all of us are attracted by a low price because we want to work within a planned budget. Unfortunately some carpet cleaners use low prices as the bait for their false and misleading advertising. They quote a cheap price–usually between $12.99 and $19.99 per room–and then, once they enter your house, they pressure you into buying “add-ons”. It’s as if you were buying a car and found that the dealer was charging you extra for the steering wheel and seat belts. Proper professional carpet cleaning is not as cheap as some unethical carpet cleaners would like you to believe.

Dual process carpet cleaning describes the process of shampooing or heavy preconditioning, then hot water suction cleaning. Unfortunately, unethical carpet cleaners often use dual process as a bait-and-switch system. Here’s how it works:

They “bait” you with a bare bones basic cleaning (single process) at an unrealistic low price. Then, when you call …
They try to “switch” you to a highly expensive dual-process cleaning.
If you do not fall for the “switch" and choose their basic single service, you’ll most likely receive poor workmanship using little or no cleaning agents, and they will not guarantee their work.

You’ll read this in almost every advertisement. You’ll hear this from every carpet cleaner. Remember: The method that’s best for you is the method that solves your problem. You’re probably looking for the most thorough cleaning. Before you choose a carpet cleaner, identify your priorities and objectives. Then choose the cleaner that offers what you want.

Years ago, many people believed this was true because their carpets were damaged by amateurs who didn’t know how to properly clean using hot water. But today, we know this is false. By professionally washing and then rinsing your carpet with steaming hot water, your carpet is thoroughly cleaned–much like the way that the person who showers and then rinses off the dirt and soap will be much more cleaner than the person who only took a sponge bath. While each carpet cleaner will be biased toward his own cleaning method. So I suggest you look to what carpet manufacturers say. Shaw Industries, the largest carpet manufacturer in the world, recommends hot water extraction with a truck-mounted unit.

The technicians called as per request prior to arrival (so we could take care of our dogs). They arrived on time, asked the best location to park the truck and gave a great first impression. Their professional approach to their task was maintained throughout. Once complete they then did a second check to be sure they had not left any mess and that all the vents were back in place. Payment was a breeze and the 5% off coupon was awesome. HomePros WILL be getting my business again!

Carpet Cleaning

I had Home Pros come in to remove a juice stain that has been on my carpet for the last two months. Ken was great, he explained the process and proceeded to remove the stain and clean the rest of the carpet in the living room. The stain was fully removed thankfully because I would have lost my damage deposit otherwise
